Some Day I Will Be A Pretzel

As part of my quest to touch my toes, I attended my first Bikram Yoga (also known as hot yoga) class on Wednesday. Bikram Yoga is done in a heated room about 105 degrees F and 40% humidity for 90 minutes. The actual humidity outside was 83% so that made it difficult to regulate the room. Apparently the room was a little warmer than normal.

The studio’s website said, “Your goal as a newbie is to stay in the room for the whole class; that’s it.” Oh my god! Does this mean I may not even be able be able to stay in the room let alone do the poses! Thankfully my sister has done hot yoga before so she gave me some pointers about the class. I called her on my way to class and told her that I was scared and it would be so easy for me to turn around and go home. She told me just to concentrate on myself and not to worry about the other students because that is what everyone else will be doing.

Well, I was able to stay in the room the entire class and actually participated in the majority of the poses. This does not mean I was doing them correctly but at least I tried. There were a few times I had to get out of the pose and just stand there because I was getting light headed. I was in awe at how much sweat I produced! Prior to moving to Baltimore, I never thought I perpspired much. Boy was I wrong. I can sweat with the best of them! But that was one of the best parts of the class - feeling like I released toxins out of my body.

Thursday morning I felt like I had been hit by a truck. I secretly like this feeling because I know I worked and pushed myself. However, I don’t like this feeling when I have to go for a 5 mile run. It was a very slow run. I plan to another class on Sunday.

Switching topics…last night I went to see Mamma Mia! I LOVED IT! Go see it. It is a great way to spend 2 hours.
